Family Vacations are Laughable, Aren’t They?
Are your family vacations as crazy and laughable as this? Okay, maybe not QUITE so crazy. And probably the crazy things that do happen to you and your kids on that well-planned picture-perfect family vacation does NOT make you laugh. (I won’t tell anyone about the tears…) Vacations with my three kids (all under the age of 7) just seem too elaborate, too overwhelming, too expensive, too EXHAUSTING. So – honestly – we rarely do it. I have to give myself a pep talk just to take my three busy kids to the library, nevertheless an expensive and extensive family vacation.
So Are Those Crazy Family Vacations Worth It?
I recently attended a Special Needs Parenting Workshop by Lisa Leonard, jewelry designer, blogger, inspiring mom of 2 beautiful boys – one who has severe disabilities. She spoke about how caring for her special needs son, David, makes everyday things harder. Nevertheless travel. But she and her husband are determined to travel with their children. And not let the imperfection of their family and their travel stop them.
[Tweet “Accept the imperfection of it all. Of life. Of family vacations. And DO IT ANYWAY!”]
I found that SO inspiring – to myself as a special needs parent, but also to ANY parent. To see her and her family, with far more challenges than I and mine, living life so fully. To just accept the imperfection of it all. Of ourselves. Of our kids. Of life. Of family vacations. And DO IT ANYWAY! Because the memories and small wonderful moments are worth it, don’t you think?!
Put Those Imperfect Family Vacations in Perspective
And if you need a laugh and a little perspective, check out Warner Brother’s new film, Blended (Rated PG-13), to be released on May 23.
