I Spy Jars Make Easy DIY Toys!
As we work on building language skills with my special needs preschooler, I Spy has been a great way to introduce new words and work on concentration skills at the same time. Simple I Spy Jars are really easy DIY toys to keep your child’s attention while you work with them on new words. Check out our Snowflake I Spy Jar…

Materials:
- 1 plastic jar with lid (I found ours at A.C. Moore craft store for $1.)
- white and blue pom poms
- white vase filler balls
- sequins
- snowflake buttons
- snowflake foam stickers
- translucent snowflake scatter confetti
Making Our I Spy Jar:
I tossed all the materials into the jar randomly and gave it a few good shakes. I realized that I needed to separate some of the flat items by pushing a few pom poms in-between them so that they could be seen individually. You could also use a hot glue gun to secure the lid if you have a little one who might get to the small items inside.
We explored what the jar looked like with the light from the window shining through on one of the rare sunny days.
Some words that you can introduce with the I Spy Snowflake Jar:
- shiny
- sparkly
- white
- blue
- snowflake
- round
- pointy
You could also work on counting skills by counting different items that you find. Give your child a task such as “find 5 white pom poms”.
Shiloh loved her I Spy Jar so much that she carried it around the house with her while she laughed and played. She even kept it with her while she watched a movie.
The great thing about this I Spy Jar is that because it doesn’t use water you can use the materials for other easy DIY toys or crafts after your child becomes bored. Then you are not wasting materials & money and you can have more fun turning the craft items into something new!
We used the items from this I Spy Snowflake Jar in several other activities:
