Fun Ideas for Earth Day for Kids
Earth Day is coming up! And it’s the perfect time to reflect on how we celebrate and nurture the Earth with our kids everyday. I thought we could all use some new ideas (From the Mouths of Moms) for celebrating Earth Day for kids…
15 Ways to Celebrate the Earth & Earth Day for Kids [From the Mouths of Moms]
1. Start Young
“Starting at an early age we are working on teaching our children about the earth and how to love and protect it. Simply things like including them in recycling daily items, planting a garden together, to observing things together on neighborhood walks can make a difference.” Kim of The Educators’ Spin On It
2. Talk About It!
“We talk a lot about how God made the Earth and it’s our job to take good care of it and how different things we do help with that – from recycling to eating organic foods to growing our own.” Carissa of Creative Green Living
3. Make April “Earth Month”
“We’re one of those hippie families….so every day with in the Creative Green Living house is like earth day and April is earth MONTH.” Carissa of Creative Green Living
4. Plan A Weekly Environmental Service Project
“We have a service project, at least weekly, that focuses on being good stewards of our environment. We are finishing up a month long project to clean litter out of a creek that runs by the elementary school. We make sure and recycle the litter that is collected. The boys are always excited to go and comment on the status of the healthiness of the creek when we walk by it each day.” Sheila of Pennies of Time
5. Spend Family Time Outdoors
“There is so much learning to be had for children and us adults. We get to be outdoors and we get to get dirty! What is not to love? Earth Day is a lovely time to celebrate the environment and to celebrate spending time outdoors.” Marnie of Carrots Are Orange
6. Have an Outdoor Scavenger Hunt
“Earth Day is kind of a big deal in our house. We try and stress the need to respect, love and take care of the Earth every day of the year, and Earth day is a great day to celebrate. We always go on an outdoor scavenger hunt.” Jen of Kitchen Counter Chronicles
7. Recycle!
“We started recycling more last year in honor of earth day. We want to teach the kids to love the earth by doing what we can to make it a better place.” Jaime of Frogs & Snails & Puppy Dog Tails
8. Clean Up Litter
“We try to pick up trash when we see it outdoors. It is so important to keep the Earth clean.” Deirdre of JDaniel4′s Mom
9. Do Recycled Material Crafts
“We do some of our ‘normal’ things but have a fun excuse to invite friends along with us. We like to do recycled crafts like this Egg Carton Caterpillar.” Carissa of Creative Green Living
10. Play Games using Recycled Materials
“We create fun art projects together with reused objects and even create a few fun games with recycled lids.” Kim of The Educators’ Spin On It
11. Make an Earth Day Snack
“We almost always celebrate holidays with special treats. Earth day is no exception. Last year the kids helped ice Earth Day Swirl Cookies.” Krissy of B-Inspired Mama
12. Plant an Earth Day Tree
“We also started a tradition last year to plant a tree or flowers with the kids. We are teaching them not only to help clean up by recycling but to give back to the earth with new life.” Jaime of Frogs & Snails & Puppy Dog Tails
13. Create a Wildlife Habitat
“It took some research, but we found a way to put a self-sustaining water element in our backyard. We are planning to have it in place by Earth Day in order to become a Certified Wildlife Habitat at Home, which you can do any time of the year.” Sheila of Pennies of Time
14. Host an Earth Day Playdate
“We usually celebrate the special day with a playdate with friends and plant some plants together and end with a special Earth Day snack.” Kim of The Educators’ Spin On It
15. Have a Picnic
“I think simple being outside is the best way for kids to grow to appreciate nature and the Earth, so we like to take our meals outside and enjoy an Earth Day picnic.” Krissy of B-Inspired Mama

How about having kids play with clay. I don’t mean the unnatural play dough type, but the wet, gray clay that comes from the earth. Kids love it and it really does come from the earth. They have the same kind in red and white but, the gray clay looks more earth like if you want to connect it to the earth. And when it gets too hard from being air dried, you can break it down, cover it with water and it reconstitutes into usable clay.
