Safe Driving Tips for “Driving While MOM”
We obviously know that driving while doing something else – being intoxicated, texting, even just talking on the phone – is dangerous. But what about while just BEING A MOM?! I mean; I know texting is distracting and dangerous while driving (and I’m certainly not advocating for doing so), but I’d almost bet that my kids are even more distracting. According to Safe Drive Systems, I’m probably right:
“Moms are twice as likely to crash than a drunk driver because of the distractions you face behind the wheel (David Strayer, Ph D. University of Utah – leading US researcher of accidents and driving safety).”
YIKES! Well unfortunately we can’t put the kids on silent during the drive as we do our phones. So what CAN we do?
I’m a Safe Driver… (If You Don’t Ask My Husband)
I hate to write this and jinx myself, but I’ve been traveling tons with my two older kids since their dad and I divorced over 4 years ago. We travel over two hours (one way) to meet their dad for their weekend visit twice a month. And I do have a secret to safe driving with kids…
My Safe Driving Secret: BE PREPARED!
Yep. It’s that simple. My secret to safer, less distracted driving is to be prepared FOR ANYTHING. Our best trips are the ones where I’ve got filled sippy cups ready, kids music or audiobooks already playing, napkins and wipes at hand, and a couple small toys within the kids’ reach. Notice I’m not saying that this always happens… Inevitably, things come up, accidents happen, and kids get crazy.
My Other Safe Driving Tip: PULL OVER
When all else fails, find a place to stop. Nothing is worth turning around. Especially when you hear how Safe Drive Systems explains it:
“Turning around to help your kids is the same as jumping out of your car and allowing it to travel 176 feet with no one behind the wheel.”
Ouch! Makes me feel pretty lucky for all of the times I’ve turned around.
Another Safe Driving Tip
But ultimately, we are all human – as are our kids – and mistakes happen. So another way to be safer when “driving while mom,” is to use a Safe Drive System. The Anti Collision Technology has a real-time monitor to check your vehicle’s safety – even better than you can, Mama! Here are some of the cool features:
- Revolutionary camera technology alters you to potential danger up to 460 feet (more than a football field) in advance.
- Anti-collision warnings in all weather lower your chances of a rear-end collision by 60-90%!
- State-of-the-Art Lane Drift Technology to prevent head-on collisions.
- “Intuitive” alerts mean your mind can respond without your eyes leaving the road by giving the extra time to respond to adverse road conditions.
- Professional set-up (right at your home!) of your system gives you convenience and peace of mind.
Sounds like a great investment to me; especially with all of the travelling my kids and I do. Want more information? Contact Safe Drive Systems by phone at (800) 735 – 6055.

Wow! 176 feet?!? That’s scary! These are great tips. Planning and being prepared for almost anything while in the car can go a long way.
