What Do You Need for The PERFECT Diaper Change?
Hmmm… Is any diaper change really perfect? Maybe that was a bad choice of adjective. How about just an EASIER diaper change? Or a somewhat TOLERABLE diaper change? Well, one thing I’ve learned over the course of raising three babies is that sometimes LESS IS MORE. You don’t always need tons of complicated gadgets and doo-dads to get the job done. And I’ve found that this is true for diaper changing, too. But there are a few things that definitely make the job easier. Here are my suggestions for diaper changing essentials…
B-Inspired Mama’s Diaper Change Essentials
- The RIGHT Diapers! – Nothing ruins a diaper change than getting almost done and having a tab rip off of a disappointing diaper. Or having baby leak through 10 minutes after the diaper change is done. Whether you’re a cloth diapering mama or disposable, sometimes it takes a little trial and error to find what works for your baby. (And keep in mind two things: Every baby is different, and I’ve found that sometimes cheaper diapers are better!)
- The Right Wipes – I’ve always preferred the sensitive wipes with no scent for my littles’ sensitive skin. And once again, the least expensive brands always worked fine for us!
- A Contoured Diaper Changing Pad – Notice that I didn’t say a changing table. I actually did use a changing table with my youngest at first, but now just use a contoured changing pad right on the spare bed in his room. But the contoured changing pad really helps the baby feel secure from rolling around. And it has straps to keep itty bitties from rolling or falling.
- Distractions – You’ve gotta have something to entertain or at least distract that baby. Itty Bitties love bold pictures on the wall or mobiles hanging above. And busy toddlers love special toys or books.
- Basic A&D – After three babies, I think I’ve tried every cream out there. And I’d have to admit that the basic A&D Ointment was the one that usually worked the best and got used the most. We still use it on my older kids’ eczema, too.
- A Diaper Caddy – Finally, you’ve got to have a system to organize it all. To have it handy. I’ve used baskets and hanging organizers before. But we were recently sent the Playtex® Diaper Genie™ SmartCaddy™, and I seriously LOVE it. It has a sturdy handle (making it portable to take to any room that’s convenient or when you travel) and it can also come apart and be hung on the side of a changing table if you prefer. Plus it has lots of pockets for those “distractions” I mentioned above.

You are right, these are the things that you really need. I would add hand sanitizer to the list too.
