The Perfect Cold Weather Family Vacation…
Our favorite time to vacation as a family is in the Fall and Winter months. The Fall and Winter are less busy for us, making scheduling a vacation easier. Plus we like breaking up the monotony of endless school days and cold weather with some family fun. However we aren’t a cold weather sports family; we don’t ski or ice skate. We like warmer weather adventures and water play, but don’t have time or money to waste travelling to a sunny beach destination. Here’s our cold weather family vacation solution…

Indoor Water Parks are the PERFECT Fall or Winter Family Vacation!
Over the past few years we’ve made it a Winter family tradition to spend a long weekend at an indoor water park. Here’s what we LOVE about indoor water parks…
- They’re Just a Drive Away – There are a couple indoor water park options within driving distance for us here in the Northeast, so no need to waste time or money on airfare.
- Everything’s in ONE Place – Indoor water parks are generally full service resorts with entertainment centers, spas, restaurants, and shops, so no need to leave the resort once you’re there!
- No Worries About Weather – Since you’re completely INDOORS, there’s no need to watch the weather at all.
- The Kids LOVE Them!
We’re so so SO excited to be heading off this Sunday to this year’s water park vacation at the brand new Kalahari Resort in the Poconos!
A Quick Look at the NEW Kalahari Resort in the Poconos:
- Family-Owned & Designed Especially for Families – Kalahari Resorts is a family-owned business; this focus on family means that it meets the needs of all members of the family – from toddlers to grandparents.
- Features an Authentic African Theme – Indoor water parks usually have a theme that they base their water park features, entertainment, and decor around. The kids are beyond-excited that Kalahari Resort features the “magic of Africa”! To prepare for the largest Kalahari resort to-date, last October the Kalahari Resorts owner, Todd Nelson, along with his wife and five children traveled to six countries in Africa to bring authentic African experiences and items back to the new Poconos resort.
- Located in the Poconos Mountains of Pennsylvania – The new resort is ideally placed for the Tristate area in the Pocono Mountains; about 2 hour from New York, 2 hours from Philadelphia, 2 hours from Harrisburg, 30 minutes Scranton and 50 minutes from Allentown. And only 3 hours from us!
- It’s HUGE! – Kalahari Resorts & Convention Center is Pennsylvania’s largest indoor water park with 100,000 sq. ft.!
- Includes an Outdoor Water Park, Too! – The outdoor water park section includes a huge outdoor pool, sundeck for relaxing, indoor/outdoor whirlpools and a swim-up bar for adults.
- A Family Entertainment Center for Non-Water Fun – The 30,000 sq. ft. Family Entertainment Center section features plenty of dry activities, including: mini-bowling, awesome arcade games, a 5D theater, black light mini golf and more!
- Plenty of Guest Room Options – There are 457 guest rooms with one-, two- and three-bedroom suites.
- Full Service Dining Under the Same Roof – The resort offers three full-service signature dining experiences that the kids will love.
- Spa Kalahari and Salon – Ahem. Mama might take advantage of this…
- Gift Shops – The resort have 6,000 sq. ft. of retail space, too.
- Phase II is Underway to Make it Even Bigger & Better! – Even before opening, Kalahari broke ground on Phase II of the project which will make the Poconos the largest indoor water park in the country and the best in the WORLD! Phase II expansion includes:
- Adding 100,000 sq. ft. to the indoor water park (totaling a true 200,000 sq. ft.)
- Nearly doubling the number of guest rooms
- Increasing the size of the outdoor water park

Thanks for the idea! We always take a summer vacation but my family and I have been contemplating taking a winter vacation. The other day as we were talking about it, we were debating on if (as we do ski and snowboard) if we’d want to go check out a ski resort or go somewhere warm. We get plenty of cold weather and snow just a short drive away.
I have heard of indoor water parks but have never been to one. We’ll have to check on out. I believe there is a ski resort nearby that also has a waterpark inside. Kind of best of both worlds.
