Is Your Christmas Shopping List Overwhelming?
I know exactly how you feel. I have a Christmas shopping problem, too. I just want my kids to have EVERYTHING. Even though I know that having everything isn’t actually good for them.
But to be perfectly honest, we don’t have the financial means to just go out and buy toys and gifts for our kids any old time. So I love, love, love when Christmas shopping season comes around and I have an excuse to shop for my littles. I just love seeing them unwrap their Christmas presents with big, bright smiles. And make memories together with their new gifts on Christmas morning. It’s so easy to go overboard while I’m shopping.
But after an overwhelming Christmas morning a couple years ago – with gifts strewn all over the living room and my bank account empty – I knew I had to reign it in. I had to stop this over-spending and over-gifting at Christmas. So last year I gave myself some structure to simplify my Christmas shopping list. Maybe it can help you, too.

My Simplified Christmas Shopping List Secret
Each of my kiddos only gets FOUR Christmas gifts.
- One Book
- One Game/Puzzle
- One Educational Toy/Kit
- One Thing They Want
That’s it! Just four Christmas presents under the tree. Giving myself this structure of just four gifts for each child helps me stay focused while shopping. Plus it helps in making sure the kids get equal gifts, too.
And let me tell you… my kids didn’t miss the chaos of Christmases past. They didn’t notice there were fewer gifts under the tree. Because I put more thought into these four gifts than I ever did the dozens I bought before.
And this year, I’ve made a printable Christmas shopping list to help me keep organized and focused during my Christmas shopping. Maybe you’d like to use it, too?

Now I do have to admit… their Christmas stockings… Those are fair game! They’re usually overflowing. I let myself go crazy on those fun little gifts. But they don’t usually do as much damage to my pocketbook.
