At Home Date Night Ideas Perfect for Busy Parents
“We’re just so tired by the end of the day.”
“We don’t have time to plan an extravagant outing.”
“We can’t find a babysitter, and our kids need to stay on their bedtime routine anyway.”
“We’re broke!”
My husband and I have said them all. We’ve said every single one of the excuses above. Excuses for not taking time out for us. Reasons for not taking time out for that much-needed date night.
And some of those “excuses” are valid reasons. I totally get how it can be hard – if not impossible – to go out on a date with your partner.
[Tweet “But it can’t be an excuse to not connect with your partner. #datenight”]
No. Not anymore. Cliff and I have learned the hard way that taking time for us is imperative, and it needs to move higher up on our list of priorities – ASAP. So today – inspired by B-Inspired Mama sponsor, Gallo Salame by Tyson® – I’m sharing some at home date night ideas any couple can fit in – after putting the kids to bed.
9 Easy At Home Date Night Ideas – For After the Kids are in Bed
Get Creative with Themes & Give the Gift of a Year of Dates – Fellow blogger and friend, Katelyn of What’s Up Fagans, explains her date night strategy…
“We have designated Friday night as our date night at home this year. We take turns planning it. It is fun to be a little creative and important to make that night just about us. No work. No phones. Just us. They are usually simple and almost always end with a movie, but it has made a big difference in our relationship.”
Check out Katelyn’s blog to see how she once gave her husband “A Year of Dates” for Christmas and find inspiration for creative date night themes – including a “You are my Superman” date night and a “Passport to Paris” themed dinner date.
Simply Stream a Movie & Share a Couple Beers – “We will put the kids to bed, find a movie on Amazon Prime and enjoy a few beers together snuggling on the couch. It’s simple but gives us a chance to be together.” Shannon of Crafty Mama in Me
Make Movie Night Delicious with Fancy Finger Food – My Clifford and I are like Shannon and her husband: We dig keeping it simple with movie night. But sometimes we add in some fancy finger food to enjoy together (or feed to one another). My hubs always loves a manly meat and cheese tray. I find some fancy cheeses for us and pair them with delicious Tyson® Gallo Salame, high quality mustard, and grapes on a serving platter.

It feels so fancy-shmansy, but it’s super simple to throw together after a busy day. Plus – it’s delicious! (Find Tyson® Gallo Salame at your local Walmart!)
Have Take Out Over Candlelight – “We like to order food to-go from one of our favorite restaurants, light a candle and enjoy a nice, quiet meal. Sometimes we even splurge on a fancy dessert.” Danielle of Mom Inspired Life
Pretend to Be Snowed In with No Electric – Leandra of LarabeeUK shared in this post how she set up a warm and inviting “snowed in” date night for her and her husband. She set it up as if they were snowed in with no electricity. So I’m sure there was lots of great conversation without the distraction of technology and lots of snuggles to keep warm, too!
Go “Window Shopping” Together via a Tablet or Laptop – One of my favorite mama bloggers, Renae of Every Star is Different, shared a couple ideas for an at home date night. One wasn’t quite G-rated enough… Ha! So I’ll share this one instead: She and her hubs “window shop” for the next holiday or gift-giving event using their tablet while snuggling on the couch. Sounds fun to me! (Well, BOTH of her ideas sounded fun to me, but… )
Take an Online Class Together – “To get out of the common date night rut, we started taking an online cooking class together. [We] put the kids in bed early and spend the evening in the kitchen cooking together.” Whitney of Beauty in the Mess
Go on a “Fake Vacation” – While Sitting on the Couch – Paula shared in this post on Beauty through Imperfection how she turned her family’s inability take a family vacation into a creative (and free!) date night for her and her husband. She explains…
“Plan out an extravagant vacation, from hotel to sightseeing, and google image search your way through. [It’s a] fun way to ‘see the world’ when you are on a tight budget and can’t actually travel.”
Get Competitive with a Board Game – Paula also claims that she and her husband play lots of board games for quality time together after the kids are in bed. Here are her top picks for two player board games.
