Construction Site Sensory Play for Winding Down
Essential oils have always played a part in my life, and over the years I have used them to help me relax, improve my concentration and to promote healing after giving birth. Today I am going to share a couple of sensory play activities with you today that use Lavender Essential Oil to add a calming effect that’s perfect for winding down after school.
By late-afternoon my kids are often starting to get irritable. The boys have been busy in school and my toddler daughter is starting to get cranky as she’s not napping anymore. It can be hard to find an activity to suit them all at this time of day but I have found that adding Lavender Oil to some sensory play activities really helps them to wind down and helps get us through to bedtime. Here’s how we used Lavender Oil to make some calming moon sand for after school sensory play.

Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup baby oil
- a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil
- lots of diggers (or cars)
Mix the flour and oil together until thoroughly combined and then sprinkle over a few drops of the lavender oil. Tip the moon sand into a sensory tray or large container and add in lots of diggers to play with.
Calming Construction Site Sensory Play – Digger Wash
After playing in all of that moon sand, the diggers are going to be in need of a good wash. Following on with a digger wash is a great way to extend the activity. Playing with water can be quite calming in itself for children as well and with the addition of a few more drops of lavender oil this will help to take it to the next level.
Fill a large deep dish with warm soapy water along with a few drops of lavender oil and place this into the center of a sensory tray or up on a towel on the floor and throw in all of the diggers for washing. The lay out a towel for them to dry out on.
