An Olympic Themed Game for Learning Colors!

Can you believe the Olympics are less than a month away?  I can’t!  To get into the Olympic spirit, I came up with this Olympic rings inspired color sorting activity for learning colors on the light table.

The materials are simple: some colored glass stones in Olympic colors (blue, yellow, black, green, and red) and some homemade colored plastic cups, again in Olympic colors.

Before setting up this activity, you could read a story about the Olympics together.  However, I didn’t have any Olympic stories on hand.  Instead, I showed them a picture of the Olympic rings and talked a little bit about what the Olympics were.  We then identified the colors of the Olympic rings, making note of the order of the ring colors.

I then arranged the plastic cups on the light table so that they looked like the Olympic rings.  Then the boys quickly turned to sorting the glass stones into the cups.  The boys worked together to sort by color, identifying the names of the colors as they went along.

Once they finished with their color sorting , we were left with some beautiful, colorful Olympic rings.

Married to her high school sweetheart, Dyan is a stay at home mom to two boys, J and K, who also teaches piano part time out of her home.  She began her blog “And Next Comes L” in March 2013 after some mom friends encouraged her to share her creative ideas.  You can read more about how her blog came to be here.  She loves to dabble in all things creative and crafty, but particularly enjoys making homemade toys and quiet books for her kids.

What a way to make learning colors fun and engaging, right?!  And to tie it into learning about the Olympics, too, is brilliant.  Thanks so much for the awesome idea, Dyan!
