After a lifelong battle with obesity, three pregnancies complicated with Gestational Diabetes and Pre-Eclampsia, and rising blood pressure and cholesterol, I took the life-altering step of having Gastric Bypass surgery. Since having my bariatric surgery four months ago, I am down nearly 60 lbs., off of my blood pressure medication, and feeling great! Bariatric surgery isn’t for everyone, but it has been a wonderful tool for me (not the solution, but just a tool) to get healthy. Especially to get my heart healthy.
So today, February 1st, the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Heart Disease Day, is a celebration for me and my new path to a healthier heart and life.
Go Red for Heart Disease with a Fun Taste Test!
In addition to wearing red today, I encourage you to educate yourself, by visiting the AHA to learn the symptoms of a heart attack in women (which are different from those in men). And make it your mission to do something, any little thing, to educate your kids about heart health today.

Here’s one fun idea… Get your little picky eaters to try different (and healthier) foods with a FUN Red Foods Taste Test!
A FUN Red Foods Picky Eater Taste Test
Last year my kids’ had a blast with our Green Food Taste Test for St. Patrick’s Day. They have begged to have another taste testing!
So I thought it would be perfect for Go RED Day, and also for upcoming Valentine’s Day, to have a RED Food Taste Test!
This taste-testing activity is seriously EASY.
Just put a bunch of red foods (a couple treats and lots of healthy options, too) into a muffin tin.
Then, Print the Kids Taste Test Chart HERE:
Your kids will love recording their taste test results like little scientists.
With this setup and simple chart in front of them, I’ve never had my picky eaters refuse to try at least one bite of a food. It’s like magic!
Will you and your kids GO RED for Heart Disease today? How do you encourage good heart health in your kids?
